7/26/15: Hypersensitive Nervous System

I slept from midnight – 8:00 AM. I woke up really tired AND awake, at the same time. I hate this feeling. Most of me wants to sleep, but my mind won’t allow it.

I have my ~100 symptoms going on, as usual, but the worst ones right now are the lightheadedness and breathing tightness/ shortness of breath. My nervous system is also out of whack.

Anyway, right now what I’m doing to cope with my symptoms is just resting, taking it easy. I’m giving myself a chance to catch my breath. (Yes, I got out of breath just from getting up out of bed. This happens every morning; I faint and then lose breath. I hate it!) After I feel my airways are expanded again, I will move to the kitchen to get something to eat. This is my daily life. I get out of bed and sit for a few hours, until I can get to the kitchen. Then, after I eat, I go back to sitting in a chair. FUN. Right.

On another note, last night’s weather (around 8 PM) was SO nice. It wasn’t anything I could tolerate sitting outside in for more than a few minutes, BUT I was able to keep my windows open. The humidity level was so low, and the air felt and smelled so clean and nice. (Anything is better than stagnant air. There are no screens here, and none of the windows work. However, my sister just figured out a solution for me to be able to keep the window open without letting my cat out.) After 8 PM, the weather cooled down, and I was able to sit outside for a while. I wish the weather was like that everyday… 70, not too sunny, breezy, and 30% humidity. THAT is my ideal weather.

By the way, I’ve always loved the sun and HOT weather, but I have had heat intolerance for several years now. So it has been a drastic change for me. Not only do I have a heat intolerance, but the sunlight makes me feel like crap too. Just sitting outside with the sun beaming on me for a minute gives me a headache, body chills, body heat flashes, sweats, fever, etc.

I know what you’re thinking– that I may be allergic to the sun. Some people are. I don’t think I developed a sun allergy. I just think that I have a hypersensitive nervous system, whether idiopathic or from another illness. My nervous system is ultra sensitive to almost anything… especially brightness, visual changes, hot to cold, cold to hot, adjusting to temperature, temperature in general, humidity levels, noise, any light, electronics, certain scents and chemicals, certain foods, and so forth. I hate being so sensitive to things.

Coping with the symptom of tight airways/trachea or labored breath

There are so many different forms of “difficult breathing”.  You may have a totally different symptom than I do, which is why I first want to describe my breathing symptoms, before I offer advice on what I do to alleviate some of the discomfort.

My trachea gets really tight.  I can feel it tensening up.  Sometimes it even closes up all the way, which is rare.  Tahat only happens when I really overexert myself from moving or talking.

My trachea gets tight every time I speak, getting tighter the more I speak.

It makes it difficult to take deep breaths.  I feel like I’m going to faint all the time, because it feels like oxygen isn’t reaching my brain.

When I laugh or cry, I get extremely lightheaded.  I still laugh and cry anyway, as I have actually morphed the way I laugh so that it won’t affect me as bad.  If I belt out my old laugh (prior to sick laugh), I’d faint.  Even some forms of emotion such as smiling makes me feel faint at times.  Frowning too.  Sometimes it makes me be stoic or seem emotionless when in reality I’m the opposite.  I’m a very emotional, passionate person in the inside, screaming inside to be heard.

When I exert myself, my airways get tighter.  It makes it very difficult to inhale.  I start getting really lightheaded. I get shortness of breath with minimal exertion.
My trachea, airways, throat, and lungs all get tight with exertion, talking, singing, and being in the heat or humidity.  (Cold, dry air also makes it worse, but not as bad as heat and humidity.)  Not are my lungs and airways intolerant to heat, but my body in general is too, so there may be some connection between an all-consuming body disease and my lung issues.  My heart also races in the heat and humidity and I feel as though I may faint.  (Sometimes I do.)

Remedies:  I often put ice on my neck to stimulate my vagus nerve.  This is the nerve that controls the vasovagal attacks.  BE VERY CAREFUL WITH THIS.  I did this without a doctor, but you should ask your doctor about it.  You can also rub the sides of your neck if your heart is racing, and it should decrease your heartrate.  But consult a doctor first.  Many doctors don’t even know about this maneuver, and if they don’t know, they won’t want to admit it.  So try to find a dr who is familiar with this, as well as the vagus nerve in general.  If you’re short on breath while laughing or crying, it is typically going to stem from your vagus nerve.  You don’t want to rub it if you’re just faint, because then you may actually faint.  But putting ice on it while I have been out of breath has helped me.  The only time I’ll rub it is if my heart is racing and pounding.  Rubbing it calms it down.  Google it to get an idea of the vagus nerve maneuver.

Another remedy I have is eating bitter foods such as broccoli.  You can google bitter foods to get an idea.  This helps people with asthma and tightening of the airways.

Also, you may want to try putting some ice or ice cold water on your back.  It may “shock” or jump start the system so that you’re shortness of breath may be semi alleviated.  Doctors don’t want to tell you these natural remedies because they won’t profit off of ice, rubs, etc.

Another thing you can try is asking your doctor for some calming medicines.  EVEN IF you do not have anxiety or any mental illness, the benzo drugs can help you.  This is why:  ANY level of stress in someone with tight airways is going to make the airways even worse.  So the tiniest amount of stress can affect you.  Take a regular, healthy person, for example.  He or she does not realize it, but one effect of stress is that the airways get tight.  In most people, they can’t feel it, because their airways are so elastic that they will go right back, or they may quiver, going back to original shape.  Or, the airways may get tighter than usual.  For us, or for people with airways that the elasticity seems extremely low, we are going to feel the slightest change in tightness… because they’re already tight!!  This is why most people won’t physically feel stress, until they’re sick with something else.  Stress does cause physical ailments, yes, but when you already have a physical illness, it’ll make it that much worse.

If you say you don’t have stress, think about this.  I was in denial too that I had zero stress.  I’m a happy go lucky person, but even we have stress. Stress doesn’t mean you’re depressed or sad, or even conscious of being stressed.  Stress can be simple things, like being annoyed at someone’s quirks, or worrying about your health.  Stress can be overthinking things, even if they’re happy thoughts!  If you’re a philosophical person, like myself, you may sit and think…and think.  This over-thinking, whether good or bad, can cause strain, therefore “stressing” your brain. It doesn’t mean you’re thinking negative thoughts.  On the contrary, most of my internal thoughts are positive.  The benzos can help you not overthink things.

The benzo warnings say do not take if having issues with breathing.  This is typically meant for people who need to forcibly breathe during sleep.  As long as you breathe regularly during sleep, your doctor may allow you to have them.  (They just make you so tired that you may not breathe as deeply during sleep.)  As long as you take a low dose, you should be okay.  Take the lowest dose they make at first.  You’ll still feel it, as long as you don’t have a built up tolerance to benzos.

Take the benzo on a FULL stomach so that you won’t get more lightheaded than you already are.

If for some reason you experience these breathing symptoms too, please comment below.  I will be checking this blog daily, so I will get back to you.  I will give you my personal email.  I would like to discuss this with those who are undiagnosed or even who are diagnosed so it can help give me insight to what I may have as an underlining condition.  I have reached out to many people who experience these same symptoms who are home bound for the most part and who have heat intolerance and many other symptoms, most of us having NO explanation or answers to what is going on.  There is NO way that thousands, possibly millions, of us are all crazy.
